The Singapore Time Walk is an innovative augmented reality (AR) app developed by Google, created to commemorate Singapore's 50th birthday. This interactive application offers users a unique and immersive experience, allowing them to explore Singapore's rich history and cultural heritage. With Time Walk, you can use your smartphone camera to point at landmarks such as the former City Hall or Old Supreme Court, bring up information and trivia about the place, plus view what the location looked like in the past. The coolest feature however, has to be the animated playback view of the past 50 years of these selected landmark locations.
OBJECTIVE
With the Singapore Time Walk app, users can step back in time and witness significant moments in Singapore's history through the lens of augmented reality. The app utilizes advanced technology to superimpose historical landmarks and events onto the user's real-world environment, creating a captivating fusion of the past and present.
CHALLENGE
Most of the technology used, such as mixed reality, was not available at the time of development. By scanning through hundreds of images and videos, we had a team working in the Netherlands and a team in Singapore on the app. This way we could test everything on the spot (right gps location, correct alignment images, etc) and have the other team do the development in the other timezone.
The app had been updated and promoted, so tourists can learn from the history of Singapore by using this app and following the Jubilee Walk.
